Care is Art, Art is Care

Curated by Joana Alarcão with an immersive virtual world developed by UAAD, "Care is Art, Art is Care" attempts to bring clarity to these inquiries and communicate the multifaceted nature of care, which spans from environmental stewardship to collective well-being and mental fortitude. By doing so, these artists challenge dominant narratives around independence and self-sufficiency, embracing the fundamental interdependence of all life forms.

In the contemporary landscape, care is an act of profound significance tied to the essence of our existence. "Care is Art, Art is Care" encapsulates the symbiotic relationship between artistic expression and the ethos of care. It posits that care, in all its forms—whether directed towards the environment, communities, or oneself—transcends mere action to become a form of art. Conversely, art becomes a vehicle for care, a medium through which empathy, responsibility, and interconnectedness are communicated and practiced. This exhibition explores this fluid interchange, asserting that caring for the world and its inhabitants is not only necessary but inherently creative and deeply transformative.

What does care entail in today's world? Can we truly separate our care for the natural world from our care for individuals? Is it sustainable to balance caring for others, both human and more-than-human, and caring for oneself? The works featured in "Care is Art, Art is Care" attempt to bring clarity to these inquiries and communicate the multifaceted nature of care, which spans from environmental stewardship to collective well-being and mental fortitude. By doing so, these artists challenge dominant narratives around independence and self-sufficiency, embracing the fundamental interdependence of all life forms.

Resilient Dissonance

The final section, "Resilient Dissonance", powerfully addresses the critical themes of mental health and resilience. By showcasing works across various mediums, these artists communicate the complexities of psychological well-being and the remarkable fortitude required to navigate mental health challenges, chronic conditions, and incurable illnesses.

Nature’s Reverie and Eco-Remedies

The first section, “Nature’s Reverie and Eco-Remedies”, brings attention to the urgent need for environmental stewardship. Through diverse artistic mediums like sculpture, installation, and sound art, the featured artists explore the complex and often paradoxical dynamics between humans and the natural world. They question the existing narratives around the symbiotic relationship between land and humanity, urging viewers to critically examine current approaches to ecological stewardship and preservation.

Inner Journeys and Outer Bonds

In “Inner Journeys and Outer Bonds”, the focus shifts to personal and relational care. Here, artists explore themes of self-care, spirituality, cultural hybridity, generational trauma, identity and the bonds that unite us. Using mixed media, sculpture, installations, and photography, they push beyond simplistic binaries of independence and dependence, foregrounding the nuanced realities of human experience and the necessity of care across multiple scales.

This exhibition is an online initiative coordinated by UAAD - Underground Art and Design and Insights of an Eco Artist, dedicated to pioneering innovative virtual experiences that bridge art and community.
