Reviews/Long Format Features
Insights of an Eco Artist (IOAEA) invites submissions for its critical reviews, which turns its attention to artists whose work sits at the meeting point of ecological urgency, political resistance, and formal experimentation.
At the center of our reviews is a single question: what does it mean for an artwork to resist? Rather than focusing only on what an artwork depicts, each review considers what it refuses, disrupts, or reroutes. We are interested in practices that do not merely respond to the crises of the present, but actively push back against the systems, narratives, and assumptions that sustain them.
Each review is a close, situated reading of an artist’s practice. It moves beyond surface interpretation to offer conceptual, cultural, and visual readings of selected works, situating them within broader critical and theoretical frameworks.
Through our reviews, IOAEA seeks to create a space for thoughtful, rigorous, and accessible critical writing, one that recognizes art as a mode of intervention and supports artists whose practices help imagine more just, attentive, and sustainable futures.
Reviews may consider ecological thought, political theory, histories of activism, cultural memory, materiality, place, and the formal languages through which an artist develops their ideas. The aim is not to categorize work, but to understand how it thinks, intervenes, and creates space for alternative ways of seeing and acting.
IOAEA approaches criticism as part conversation, part analysis. Reviews engage seriously with the intentions, contexts, and complexities of an artist’s practice while remaining attentive to the wider social and ecological conditions in which that practice operates. The series values work that challenges power structures, reshapes public discourse, and proposes new relationships between people, environments, and systems.
Artists working across all media are welcome to submit, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image, performance, sound, text, social practice, and interdisciplinary or research-based projects. Submissions may address environmental degradation, climate justice, extraction, colonialism, migration, public space, community resilience, more-than-human relationships, political agency, or other forms of ecological and social resistance.
